Short for eXPerience. An old mainstay of roleplaying games, the mechanic was introduced in the original Dungeons & Dragons and used in almost every roleplaying game since.

Experience is earned through fulfilling the goals in the rules, like earning gold or developing your character, and leads to character development, usually by allowing the use of new skills or powers or improving existing such. GM attempts to balance challenges and antagonists to compensate may lead to hamster wheeling*
